Kota Kinabalu: The need to upgrade the status of Tawau Airport to an international airport is subject to the findings of the National Airport Strategic Plan study, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

She said that this study is being carried out by the Ministry of Transport, and its scope includes the direction and functions of every airport in Malaysia.

"Tawau Airport is a domestic airport designed to accommodate a capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year," she said during question time at the State Legislative Assembly here on Thursday.

She was responding to a question from Sri Tanjong assemblyman Justin Wong.
