Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old woman was jailed two months’ jail and fined RM5,000 or jailed six months by the Magistrate’s Court here for promoting online gambling using a handphone, last year.
Mirilyn Basir pleaded guilty to promoting online gambling through a gambling app and Google Sheets to customers on Dec 9, 2024, at 3.30pm at a unit in The Garden Condominium, Jalan Bundusan, Penampang.

The charge under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment of up to three years and in addition liability of a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000 for every gaming machine seized.
The magistrate ordered Mirilyn to serve the jail sentence from the date of her arrest.
Based on the facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, the police team raided a unit at the condominium in an Op Dadu and found a woman, later identified as Mirilyn, who confessed as a caretaker of the unit.
Mirilyn Basir was found in the living room, actively promoting online gambling for the companies GOD33 and LV9 using her mobile phone.

She admitted to working as a customer service representative, promoting online gambling through phone calls based on a list she had obtained.
A report by a gambling expert confirmed that the seized items, upon analysis, were components and devices used to promote and control online gambling activities, the facts stated.

In another case, a 43-year-old man was charged with damaging a car component.
Sa Hock Chan pleaded not guilty to committing mischief by damaging the crankshaft sensor of a car belonging to one Maria P Juanico, which caused a loss of RM125.
The offence allegedly took place on Jan 15, this year, at 6.53pm, near the Bataras hypermarket, Kolombong.
The charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between one year and five years or a fine or both on conviction.
The court set March 17 for case management and released the accused on RM1,600 bail in two sureties.
