Free meals for urban poor within the city: Inspired by Tunku Mariamz

Kota Kinabalu: Dapur Kita Kita (DKK) is Sabah’s pioneering initiative to ensure nobody who lacks the means will go hungry by providing free meals. The community-driven effort is built on the principles of generosity and solidarity.

Not many are aware that the inspiration behind the name came from Tunku Mariamz binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj, a member of Johor’s royal family.

A frequent visitor to Sabah, the Agong’s sister commended Datuk Koh Chung Jade, the owner of Jetsin Sdn Bhd, to start a programme similar to a Soup Kitchen, to provide nutritious meals to the underprivileged.

The idea led to the formation of DKK, and the name was suggested by Tunku Mariamz to reflect that it’s community-driven.

When it comes to skincare, the first thought on our minds would be beauty products such as serums, creams, and masks. However, beauty experts and even researchers have stated that drinking more water can be just as crucial for your skin's health.
DKK was officially launched by Tunku Mariamz in February. In her speech, she commended Koh for his humanitarian efforts and emphasised the importance of extending kindness to those in need.

She urged more people to support the initiative, highlighting that providing a simple yet sufficient meal can make a significant difference in the lives of the underprivileged.

DKK operates through the team work of volunteers, donors and community partners who work tirelessly to prepare and distribute meals.  Volunteers engage in various tasks, including chopping vegetables, cooking, packing meals, and maintaining cleanliness at the premises, all without receiving payment.

Their efforts are purely voluntary, motivated by a shared desire to help the community. Volunteer, Hashima Hasbollah, said DKK officially began operations on Dec 16, 2024.

She said donors have contributed in various ways, including cash donations placed in an allocated donation box at the premises.

Key collaborator in the initiative is the Sabah Chef Association, led by its President, Adrian Chong. He said their role is in ensuring the meals are nutritious and well-balanced.

“Each day, 200 meal packets are prepared, with 40 packets sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and 23 packets delivered to Usia Mosque.

Meal distribution occurs daily, except on Sundays. During the fasting month, the schedule is adjusted to coincide with the breaking of fast,” he said.

A defining feature of DKK is its inclusivity, reflecting the empathetic and accommodating nature of Sabahans. Anyone in need, regardless of background or circumstance, can receive a meal without any questions asked.

Koh has been deeply committed in helping the less fortunate by providing support in any way he can. One of his key efforts is offering free meals, recognising that the rising cost of living has made it difficult for many to afford even basic necessities.

This compassionate approach has made DKK a vital lifeline for struggling individuals and families in urban areas.  “Now, more than ever, its existence is crucial and long overdue,” he said.

The sustainability of DKK relies heavily on donations and volunteer efforts. Contributions come in various forms, including financial aid, food supplies, and manpower. The initiative has also gained traction on social media, helping to spread awareness and encouraging more individuals to get involved.

Koh has pledged to continue supporting the initiative and encouraged others to contribute in any way possible, whether through monetary donations, volunteering, or providing resources to ensure the project continues to assist those in need.

At the moment, similar initiatives are also being carried out by other NGOs and church groups in Tanjung Aru and Penampang.
