PUTATAN: Parti Warisan has set a RM10 million surety bond for its candidates in the coming 17th state election to prevent defections and other violations.
Party President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the condition ensures winning candidates face legal action if they breach party rules, including party hopping.
“We need to match grassroots voters’ preferences because candidates are crucial. They will be scrutinised, as 65 per cent of voters everywhere are young people,” he told reporters after visiting fire victims at Dewan Sri Putatan, Tuesday.
“Second, do not jump parties. That is the criteria we have set. Although we know the Anti-Hopping Act exists, I am prepared. If anyone jumps, I will take them to court for RM10 million,” he said.
The former Chief Minister and Senallang Assemblyman acknowledged many are interested in candidacy, but pointed out that the primary focus is on commitment to serve the people.
“Many are eager to become candidates, but for me, this election is not about appeasing feelings. We want to take power. The people need leadership capable of solving various problems,” said Shafie, who expressed shame over politicians’ tarnished reputation due to corruption and water supply issues.
On the five per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST) expansion in July, Shafie voiced concerns about its direct impact on Sabahans.
“I have raised this in Parliament. My worry is price increases that will burden society. When SST is implemented, I hope the Government takes cost-saving measures in national financial management,” he said, noting the country’s expenditure has reached RM400 billion.
He called for preventing leakages and avoiding non-priority spending, urging the Government to play its role in addressing the issue.
During his visit to the 27 families affected by two separate fires in Putatan, Shafie reiterated his previous proposal for a permanent disaster relief centre, similar to one established in Beaufort.
“Temporary placements like halls can only be used for three days. After that, victims must find elsewhere.
“If they stay with relatives, it can cause long-term social effects,” he said, pointing out the need for a permanent facility to house disaster victims temporarily while they secure new accommodation.
