Maggi Kaamatan event raises RM15k for community

PENAMPANG: The Maggi® Malaysia “Kaamatan Masak Dan Menang” roadshow at ITCC, drew a huge crowd over three days showcasing of food, culture, and community empowerment. It was officiated by Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, who is also Chairperson of the Rural Development Corporation (KPD). 

With the slogan “Kari Lah”, the campaign spotlighted Maggi®’s commitment in uplifting local communities, particularly women and indigenous groups.

As part of the Jom Masak & Menang Bersama Maggi® contest, Maggi® pledged RM0.10 for every product purchase made between May 1 and June 30, 2025.  It was under their CSR programme.

Awang Hisham brought home brand new Isuzu D-Max.The initiative culminated in a RM15,000 donation to Pacos Trust Sabah, a NGO that had championed rural and indigenous empowerment for over two decades.

“The Kaamatan festivities are a time to come together, share joy, and celebrate over good food and company. 

For over two decades, Maggi® had stood alongside us during any celebrations. In embracing the unique culture and heritage of Sabah, Maggi®’s ongoing efforts to uplift local communities are indeed commendable,” said Lasimbang.

The grand finale of the cooking contest, saw seven finalists competed for top prizes.

Awang Hisham Bin Sitar (42) from Likas, a former food stall operator turned full-time househusband, emerged as the grand prize winner, driving home a brand-new Isuzu D-Max.

Joe Alson Chiam (32) from Sandakan took first runner-up, winning branded cooking appliances worth RM3,000.

Mohd Alamin Yaali (32), a boat technician with Maritim Malaysia, secured third place with RM1,500 and branded kitchenware.

The event showcased Maggi®’s role in fostering sustainable development and cultural pride across Sabah.

Also present were Wong Chong Huat, Operations Manager for Sabah; Derek Won, Executive Officer of Maggi Malaysia; Alex Yapp, General Manager of Harrison Sabah; Ng Kiong Meng, General Manager of Bataras; Anne Lasimbang, CEO of PACOS Trust, among other distinguished guests.

Local chef Melvin Gatu (34), from Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort captivated the crowd with his creative twist on traditional Sabahan cuisine using Maggi products. 

Known for championing Sabah’s rich culinary heritage, Melvin Gatu (34) from Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort captivated the crowd with his inventive take on traditional Sabahan cuisine. 

His cooking showcase highlighted how local ingredients such as losun, tuhau, and bambangan can be elevated using modern techniques and Maggi products to appeal to contemporary palates.

Melvin’s signature creations like Nasi Goreng Losun, Ikan Masin, and Ikan Basung Goreng marinated with tuhau were infused with Maggi Sambal Tumis and CukupRasa, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. 

The dishes represented Sabah’s culinary legacy, proving that traditional flavours can be made fun, modern, and accessible in today’s kitchens.

Through his showcase, Chef Melvin aimed to introduce Sabah’s unique ingredients to a wider audience and demonstrate their potential to shine on the international stage.
