TAWAU: Eighteen stilt houses at Kg Kurnia Jaya in Batu 4 here were destroyed in a late-afternoon fire on Wednesday, with firefighters managing to prevent the flames from spreading to hundreds of nearby homes.

Firefighters from Tawau, assisted by teams from Kunak and the Titingan Community Fire Unit, brought the blaze under control within 25 minutes, using seawater and tanker supplies to contain the flames that also razed a Proton Wira sedan.

No injuries were reported, and the operation—which involved more than 50 personnel including PDRM and APM officers—successfully protected an estimated 500 surrounding homes before being fully stood down at 5.47pm.
