TENOM: The Bukit Layang-Layang vegetable farm in Ulu Paal is poised to become a model for high-impact highland agriculture through close collaboration between local growers, the community and government agencies, said Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
Jamawi said the 20-hectare site, developed over the past three years, prioritises organic inputs and minimal chemical use in producing cabbages, cauliflowers, aubergines, chillies and peppers.
He said the project also benefits the local community, with all workers hired from nearby villages and earning at least RM1,700 a month including EPF contributions.
Jamawi added that the farm could serve as an alternative source of highland vegetables to Kundasang, providing consumers with more options and strengthening Sabah’s food supply chain.
He said his ministry is reviewing requests to upgrade agricultural roads and build rain shelters to support sensitive crops, while the Agriculture Department continues monitoring produce quality to ensure it meets safety standards.
