KINABALU TIMES (Tuesday, December 12, 1967) - JESSELTON, Mon. - The Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, who is also the Chairman of the Malaysian Alliance Party today hailed the coming together again of the former members of Sabah Freedom Fighters.

He said this in a cable sent to the President of Upko, Dato Donald Stephens, congratulating him and members of the party’s National Council on their decision to dissolve Upko.

The congratulatory cable followed the publication today of a statement issued in the name of the party’s Secretary-General, Enche Peter Mojuntin and the text of the speech by Dato Stephens when he moved the motion to dissolve the Upko.

The statement disclosed that the party’s national Council after a six-hour debate unanimously approved the motion on Saturday night.

The motion called for the dissolution of Upko and for an approach to be made to Usno to accept on block all Upko members as Usno members.

Dato Stephens among other things said that he was moving for the dissolution of the Upko in the interest of bumiputra unity.

The Tunku’s cable read: “I agree with your move to dissolve Upko so that the people of Sabah can work together in unity and understanding for the good of Sabah as a whole.

“As a compatriot I heartily congratulate you and members of the Upko for an act of patriotism unsurpassed in any source and in any form.

“Please convey to your members my good wishes, and heart warm welcome back to the party.”
