IT was a sad day for humanity — as Muslims were fasting during Ramadan and Christians praying on Good Friday — when both religions were insulted.

The holy Quran was viciously burnt in Sweden by a far right group and the historical Jesus ridiculed somewhere in the West also. This reflects the state of hatred today.

The burning of the Quran and the mocking of Jesus Christ on Good Friday are strongly condemned. The Quran is a divine revelation and is utmost sacred for Muslims. Words cannot describe how much Muslims revere the Quran.

It is the very word of Allah SWT revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW through the archangel Jibril. The principles of the Quran are the source of every Muslim’s faith and practice.

As the holy book must be treated with the deepest respect, there are ways in handling the Quran but the far right group chose to ignore it and barbarically burnt the holy book — a disgraceful act.

As for the other incident, Good Friday is a sacred and important day for Christians. According to Christian scriptures, Jesus was the refuge of the poor, needy and forlorn, and he wore himself out in selfless service.

He underwent a life of suffering that no ordinary man could have withstood. Evil man opposed him and after his own disciple betrayed him, he was flogged and made to carry the cross to Calvary. Good Friday is also remembered with deep gratitude for the sacrifice made by Jesus.

But a viral video on social media shows a man dressed up as the Messiah, carrying a cross made up of beer crates. He shamefully imitates Jesus while holding a bottle of beer in his hand.

This was an insult to Jesus Christ but some people laughed without having the slightest decency of respect for the historical sacred personality.

These perpetrators are not adherents to any religion for no religion teaches its followers to insult or condemn another’s religion.

It may seem that respect for another’s religion is diminishing worldwide, and disrespect for anything that is holy is spreading like a cancer to the whole body of humanity.

Yet, people do not seem to mind the wicked path they are treading. Those who attack or insult religions are humans in form but lack human qualities.

As the great teacher Sri Krisna once told the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, people’s evil qualities have encouraged them to do wicked deeds and made them mentally blind.

Hatred that exists between people of different religions will ultimately bring destruction of faith in religion itself. Instead, respect the beliefs and practices of all others.

I call upon our Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh brothers and sisters to denounce the burning of the Holy Quran and the mocking of Jesus Christ.
