Avoid wasting food during Buka Puasa

So this is the best time for the authorities and rakyat to come together and solidify the Malaysia Madani concept mooted by the prime minister in line with its pillar of compassion (ihsan).
WITH the start of Ramadan, I would like to express my concern about the rising prices of food.

This is a time when many Malaysians are struggling due to the pandemic and the economic complications that follow.

As such, it is important that we ensure that food prices remain stable during this period and are made accessible to the rakyat.

I believe that the monitoring of food prices during Ramadan is essential for two reasons.

FIRST, it will ensure that those who are struggling financially can still access affordable food; and,

SECOND, it will allow those with extra means to donate to others in need, be it in the form of food or money.

Pasar Ramadan, or “param” as some call it, is the popular location during Ramadan where Malaysians come together to celebrate our No. 1 common interest — food.

I would like to suggest that the local authorities set up tents or stations at these locations to serve as touch points for the people to channel assistance to the needy.

Interested non-governmental organisations can collaborate with the local councils and religious authorities for this purpose.

It is heartbreaking that every Ramadan, we hear of families with young children who are unable to celebrate the holy month and Syawal due to poverty.

So this is the best time for the authorities and rakyat to come together and solidify the Malaysia Madani concept mooted by the prime minister in line with its pillar of compassion (ihsan).

The new academic year has also begun in Ramadan, and needless to say, many parents would feel the pinch financially. The government’s early school aid programme that provided much relief to parents should be applauded.

On the other end of the spectrum, we see increased food waste during Ramadan, especially at outlets offering Ramadan buffets.

While it is a common practice for Malaysians to organise breaking-of-fast events, it is worth reminding everyone not to overindulge and waste food.

Perhaps it is time for the government to lead by example by doing away with extravagant events at the ministerial and agency levels during this holy month. The budget could be repurposed for charitable causes. After all, Ramadan, especially during the Madani era, is meant to remind one about humility, moderation and being grateful.
