Eidelweiss deserves a salute for pursuing her dream despite the wet blanket treatment from Sabah. According to her she is hoping to represent Malaysia in the Olympics.
THE gold medal achievement by Eidelweiss Franzel Fancey Sani (pic), 18, from Penampang, at the 21st Sukma Games for Sarawak speaks volumes about the sad state of Sabah sports.

The excuse by the Sabah selectors was that she did not qualify for inclusion. If so, how come Eidelweiss put up an impressive performance that won her the gold.

It is fortunate that there is flexibility in the Sukma representation with states open to fielding contestants from outside their state.

Although Sabah officials failed to see her potential and rejected her, it did not dash her hopes. Sarawak did not make the mistake and is having the last laugh.

If she does win a medal on the world stage it will be a further blow to Sabah.

It is unfortunate that while other States go to great lengths to select winning athletes, it doesn’t seem to be the case here.

It was also good that she had both Sabahan and Sarawakian parents, which made it even more meaningful.

Since the terrible mistake robbed Sabah of a gold a revamp in the Sabah Sports Council is in order, including the position of the Minister of Youth and Sports as well as the heads of the Sabah Sports Council and Sabah Karate Association.

I recall another time this happened was when Vijay Singh applied for Permanent Resident status because he loved Sabah but was rejected by the PBS Government just because he was brought in by Berjaya to train and mould young golfers.

What happened next – he went on to become one of the world’s greatest golfers.

Disappointed
