Duo held with 1kg of syabu in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Police arrested two local men in their 30s for alleged drug trafficking during a check on Tuesday at 8.40pm at a supermarket in Bandar Indah, here.
Sandakan District Police Chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said initial investigation found the two men are from Silam, Lahad Datu and tried to bring drugs to Sandakan using private vehicles.

However, investigation is still ongoing, including how long the suspect’s activity has been going on and where the drug was obtained. The two jobless suspects were also tested positive for amphetamine. The suspects, who have no past criminal records, have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code until March 19 for further investigations.
If convicted under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the suspects may be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life and whipped. During the arrest, one of the men was holding a black plastic package which was later found to contain a green one while the other suspect was in a car.
“When opened, the package contained crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine with a gross weight of 1.05kg and current market price of RM52,500,” he said.
“This is also the second biggest seizure of by Sandakan police headquarters for this year, while on March 1, we arrested a suspect with drugs weighing 2.1kg worth about RM113,000,” he added.

He was speaking during a press conference at police’s Anti-Narcotic Investigation Division, here, Thursday. Azhar said police is serious in dealing with drug and criminal issues as well as drug syndicates.
“We will always ensure that drug trafficking groups who are trying to enter and distribute drugs in Sandakan are eradicated and we will take decisive actions against them,” he said.

“We found many tactics used by these drug traffickers who are trying to bring drugs to Sandakan.”
Azhar also said that from early February to mid-March, the Criminal Investigation Division recorded several successes.
“Operations such as Ops Pintu and Ops Lejang solved 34 cases with a seizure of about RM119,710,” he said.
A total of nine suspects aged 20-34 consisting five locals and the rest foreigners were detained in the cases, thanks to public cooperation.
Meanwhile, Azhar said police on Feb 22 arrested a man in the parking area of a supermarket at Mile 6 suspected of 18 house break-ins and thefts around Taman Wijaya and Taman Sejati, here.
Azhar said police also recovered RM22,500 in stolen goods out of the reported loss of RM48,500. The investigation found that the suspect also had prior drug and housebreaking records.
