KKIA Level 3 toilets closed until March
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAHB) clarified that all toilets at Level 3 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) are currently closed for public use and is expected to open by end of March.

A MAHB spokesman, when contacted, regretted the inconveniences caused to members of the public during the span of the closure.

“We are in the middle of refurbishing the toilets on that level which will be made based on dry and wet concept,” he added.

He said this new concept would be introduced in the female restroom near the check-in counter at Island C and also the male restroom near the check-in counter at Island B.

“We apologise for taking so long to improve these facilities but we are sure the public will be satisfied as there will be extra features there later,” he added.

He said the refurbishment of the toilets are part of the upgrading works in that airport.

“One of the efforts we’ve taken was to check the condition of the sewerage pipelines in the whole airport to ensure that it will not clog and cause the manholes in our compound to overflow in future.

“Our main goal is to carry out these improvements without disrupting the airport operations.”

As for the escalators in the airport, he said there was no report of any fault to the escalators near Macdonald outlet on Feb 28.

“Our contractor’s technical report carries no mention of this matter,” he added.

He said it would keep a close eye on the matter to ensure all the escalators there are functioning well at all times.

The spokesman was responding to a complaint by a former passenger who was surprised that all the toilets in the Departure Hall on Level 3 were closed for maintenance when he was there in the morning of Feb 28.

“I needed to go the loo when I noticed all the toilets were unusable and I had to use the ones downstairs,” said the Daily Express reader.

He, however, said he was met with another problem when he wanted to use the escalators after using the toilet at Level 1.

“The escalator on the way down was fine except the one going up was not working at the time and I had walk up with my luggage with me and it was tiring,” he added.

He wondered whether the airport management has embarked on energy saving by switching off electricity for the escalators.
