SHA seek Education Dept’s support
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Hockey Association (SHA) has sought the support and assistance of the Education Department in their quest to develop the sport in the State.

Its President Dato Sri Anil Jeet Singh who led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on Sabah Education Department Director Mistirine Radin at her office on Monday said they are determined to bring the game to a new level.

Sabah’s historic gold medal in the boys event and silver for the girls at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perak, last year has inspired them to further develop the sport, he said.

“We don’t want to be seen as a one-win wonder, so it is important for us to continue to nurture our young talents. We have to start from the grassroots level as we believe once we have to build a strong foundation; it will be easier for us to sustain the standard.

“However, this cannot be done in one day, so we will be doing things one step at a time. We will start a development programme and will teach young talent the right technique from a young age. Apart from that, we will also be organising tournaments for the Under-10, 12, 16 and so on.”

According to him, the purpose of the visit was to seek support and assistance from the State Education Department in the development of hockey among schoolchildren and teachers.

“When we talk about development, it is going to involve schoolchildren or teachers, so it is important for us to cooperate with schools,” he added.

He also proposed for a hockey school in Sabah like the rest of their counterparts in the Peninsula.

“I think this is a logical proposal and will benefit the game of hockey in Sabah. This is not something that cannot be done because we already have the facility. I was made to understand that SMK Weston Beaufort has a synthetic pitch, so why not we start from there,” he said.

The delegate also hoped the department will look into the matter concerning the long-awaited SMK Abdul Rahim Kudat synthetic hockey pitch, which was approved by the previous government.

“We hope the department will help us to look into the matter because we believe by having a synthetic pitch in the northern part of the State will also help us in the development of hockey.”

Also at the meeting were SHA deputy president Datin Nuinda Alias, vice presidents Basari Sarkun and Joko Purwanto Jimin as well as secretary Avtar Singh.
