KOTA KINABALU: Nicole Belle Nicklos captured two bronze medals at two BMX championships held at Nilai National BMX Track in Negeri Sembilan over the weekend.

The nine-year-old who took part in the 9-10 age group, won her first medal on Saturday at the Asian BMX Championship followed by another third place finish in the Malaysia International BMX Race held at the same venue.

The SK Kaingaran, Tambunan pupil was very pleased with her achievement in the two races.

“I am very happy to win two medals for the State. Thank you to Sabah Cycling Association for giving me the opportunity and I will try even harder in coming races,” she said.

The weekend races was her fourth competitions since she took part in the Sports Excel BMX Series one, 7-9 age group, last year where she finished third and fourth in circuit two followed by her title win in the Sports Excel BMX Series 2 for the 9-10 age group earlier this year. Coach Niklos Minol, who is also Nicole’s father, said she needs more track training especially on the starting and sprinting.

“Nicole will have to compete in more races because Sabah does not have BMX tracks unlike other states. It is always difficult for her to compete with other riders and I hope a proper BMX track will be built here in the near future,” he said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, another rider in the team, Dreviona Megdelynna Davin, 11, from SK Kilimu, Ranau also did well to finish fourth on the first day race and sixth the following day in the 11-14 category. – GL Oh
