LD team tops Labuan deep-sea fishing contest
LABUAN: A whopping 95kg catch by the LDJU C team from Lahad Datu took the crown in the Labuan Daiwa Deep Sea Fishing Challenge and pocketed RM35,000 prize money.

The PCML team, a group of Labuanites, came second with a 72kg catch, bringing home RM10,000 cash.  Another Lahad Datu team, LDJU A, finished third with a 67kg catch, bagging RM5,000 cash.

The competition, one of the main highlights of the 23rd Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC), drew an overwhelming response from both local and international anglers. Some 94 contestants, including 18 from Hong Kong, in 11 boats managed to reel in massive catches during the three-day tournament.

As the curtains drew to a close, a sea of people thronged the annual event, which packed an array of extreme and family-fun activities for almost 5,000 water sport enthusiasts, participants and visitors.

The half-day event was flagged off by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad at the Sea Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Organising chairman Aswadi Taba said this year’s event was challenging as some of the anglers were hit by huge waves and thunderstorms.

“We hope more anglers will take part in the event next year,” he said. The Labuan Round Island Kayak Challenge 2019, another highlight, attracted an increased number of participants from across the country and Brunei.

The men’s single closed category was bagged by Kasmiewandi Kassim from Persatuan Kanu Labuan, followed by Madzan Yunus from Persatuan Homestay Labuan and Abdul Mutalib Sahari from Persatuan Kanu Labuan in third place.

The men’s double was won by siblings Nazmar Sukarno and Shahdan Sukarno, also from Labuan.

The mixed double category were won by Ahmad Saifuddin Jamaluddin and Myrza Fasha Md Hamyrudin. In second place were Muhammah Sahri Tanim and Siti Emmah Talip, while Hafizuddin Mohamad and Nazera Roslan were third.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Tibor Virag emerged champion in the men’s single open category, while Mohd Noh Parmin from Malaysia was second and Khairul Amri Ibrahim from Persatuan Kanu Terengganu was third.

Fajan Satta and Imam Sujadi Satta won the men’s double open category, while Mohd Azlan Ibrahim and Nusaibah Syahida Ibrahim were second.
