220 crocs seized
TAWAU: Four people, including two Indonesians, were detained here Saturday following the discovery and seizure of 220 crocodiles suspected to have been smuggled in from Indonesia.

The crocodiles, including five already dead, were seized in a joint operation conducted by the Tawau Wildlife Department and Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in the mangrove forest in Kg Pasir Putih, near here.

District Wildlife Officer, Sailun Aris, said the seizure at 10.30am was based on an Esscom initial intelligence report.

“Two locals and two Indonesians aged between 55 and 61, suspected to be involved in smuggling in the reptiles, were also detained,” he said.

“The crocodiles were kept in gunnysacks and are believed to have been smuggled in using boat,” said Sailun.

He believed a syndicate was behind the activity, based on the huge number of the confiscated reptiles, which also included hatchlings.

The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
