Jelius admits Tambadaus below-par despite win
KOTA KINABALU: The 1-0 win over Negeri Sembilan was an important one for the Tambadaus despite a below-par performance from the players at Likas Stadium on Saturday night.

The team laboured to victory thanks to a controversial goal from Alto Linus where the linesman had earlier put up his flag for offside then reversed his decision which infuriated the Negeri Sembilan bench.

The three points strengthened their position in the chase for promotion spots with six more matches remaining.

They are currently in second place with 28 points and only one behind leaders JDT II while UKM are a point behind in third. Sabah also have a game in hand over both teams.

Head coach Jelius Ating (pic), who has guided the team to eight wins, four draws and two losses in the league this season, was very happy with the result but admitted the team were not their usual self on the night.

“I am happy for the win. We did not start well, and I have to admit that the team didn’t perform what was expected of them. They played well before this but tonight our opponents have more of the ball possession.

“This is what happens in football. Sometimes you play well but lose the game and tonight we won despite not playing well.

“It was a 50-50 game from my point of view and I am glad we managed to take one of the chances to score. I have to give credit to all the players for the hard work to ensure the victory.

“The players also realised that they did not play well and admitted to me after the match. Well, to me what is important was to win the game and how we can improve in coming matches.”

On the controversial winning goal, he reckoned it was not off side but that the linesman had put up his flag far too early.

He said he understood the feeling of the visitors and it could happen to any team but the decision of the match officials is final.
