Labuan chimney trail project
LABUAN: The Labuan Chimney built in the 19th century and remaining steeped in history and cloaked in mystery will be embellished with a 500-metre chimney trail to enhance the  landmark’s attraction.

Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli who recently visited the site said he is prepared to allocate RM200,000 from his funds to kick-start a chimney trail project in the area.

He said the trail would offer a scenic view, sheltered at its end and convenient as a spot for picnic or other events.

He also said: “I plan to do this because the Labuan Chimney is one of its kind of tourism product in the region and a strong icon of the island and well visited by people. Having a walking trail would enhance the eco-tourism value of the site.”

Rozman hoped that the relevant authorities would follow up with his decision. Until today, many are still intrigued by the  chimney and another structure known as “gudang ubat” to locals and despite researches, it  remains like a jigsaw puzzle with parts missing.”

Research into the historical landmarks had revealed information like there was town called “Edward” near the site and it was the dwelling place of the management and staff of the chimney. The site was also linked to the harbour by a 11-mile railway line.

But today none of this could be seen though in records.
