Fisherman is caught again violating the law
KOTA KINABALU: The proverb “once bitten, twice shy” doesn’t seem to be in the books of a local fisherman who was again caught violating the law, here, Saturday.

A marine police team on “Ops Gelora” duty caught him and another fisherman fishing some three nautical miles off the coast of Pulau Sepanggar and Pulau Gaya, about 10.30pm and 12.55am, respectively.

Sabah Region Four Marine Police Commander, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali, said the fisherman was detained several days ago and the case was handed over to the Fisheries Department, adding the fisherman was released after a compound was issued to him.

He said it was disheartening to see the fisherman returning to his old ways despite being caught and compounded for the same offence just a few days ago.

The latest case is being probed for violating what has been stipulated in the licence, he said.

The team also seized a substantial amount of fish during the operation.

He again assured that there would be no compromise for those found violating the law.

He also said trawling close to the coast could be very dangerous to smaller vessels as well as the corals and marine ecosystem.
