MPKKs need to understand their roles better
LAHAD DATU: The Village Community Development Council (MPKK) needs to have better grasp of its tasks, roles and responsibilities.

State Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the Council is the centre for all developmental activities coordinated at village-level. It also acts as an intermediary between the people and Government.

“In general, the MPKK serves as the voice of the community on basic needs such as building of roads, electricity, water, schools and places of worship, among others.

“Therefore, MPKKs needs to understand their roles and responsibilities clearly so they can carry out the responsibilities in their respective fields,” he said in a speech presented by the State Assistant Minister of Rural Development, Dumi Masdal, at the closing ceremony of the MPKK Management and Administrative course here, recently. Chairpersons and secretaries of the Council were among those present.

Ewon also urged the Council to strengthen unity and co-operation to ensure all the planning to develop the villages can be implemented well.

He said the good co-operation and unity in the Council can help to overcome external challenges that threaten to weaken the institution.

The council should also avoid any action that can trigger racial provocations or sensitive issues that can destroy unity.

“There must be an increase in communal activities such as gotong-royong, neighbourly visits, sports and recreation to cultivate and foster relationships between the multiracial communities in the State,” he added.

He also called for more attention given on village safety such as the influx of illegal immigrants, drug abuse and other crimes as well as diseases in their respective areas.
