LAHAD DATU: Felda Global Venture (FGV) and its administration have been urged to play a more proactive role in controlling and preventing dengue cases that are on the rise particularly in the Felda areas.

State Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie (pic) said that as of September this year, 447 dengue cases have been reported in the district with  95 per cent rise compared to last year which was reported at 229 cases. Three deaths have been reported all of which took place in Felda areas. He said of the total, 139 cases were recorded in the Felda district where it registered an increase of 97 cases compared to the previous year.

Apart from Felda, Frankie said an increase in dengue cases was recorded in the Silam area where 65 cases were recorded compared to 21 cases the previous year.

“The community has to play their role more proactively because the disease is caused by the attitude of the people who do not care about their environment.

“People need to change their attitudes and spend at least 10 minutes each week to clean their premises and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds,” he said during his visit at Lahad Datu hospital, here, Friday. Frankie said community representatives such as the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) and the Neighbourhood Community (KRT) should also play their part in the community.

These representatives could organise Gotong Royong programmes more frequently to prevent the widespread of dengue cases, he said.

Frankie added that the activity would also reduce the burden and constraints faced by the Health Department as the Felda areas is very far from Lahad Datu.
