KOTA BELUD: SPM and STPM graduates should choose their field of study before continuing their studies at public and private higher education institutes.

Sabah Rural Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick (pic) said this was important because according to a recent study released by higher education institutions, 500,000 graduates were still unemployed and had no job opportunities due to competition in the market for employment.

He said the situation was worrying as more and more students were looking for opportunities to pursue their studies at either the public or private institutions of higher learning.

“The main failure of graduates to place themselves in the workplace is due to the mistake of choosing a field that promises high employment opportunities,” he said.

He said this in a speech in conjunction with the launch of the Mini Education Carnival organised by BestPrestige Educare Malaysia with the Geomatics Group, at Dewan Tun Said Kota Belud, recently.

The text of his speech was delivered by KPLB Sabah Political Secretary Carlye Lajimin.

In this regard, Ewon, who is also the Assemblyman for Kadamaian, said graduates are not only required to look for opportunities in the public and private sectors but also to venture into the business and entrepreneurial world which offer more opportunities.

“The choice of field is therefore paramount and it is of utmost importance for all students pursuing higher education to avoid unemployment after graduation,” he said.

In addition, he said, students were also asked to do research on high-demand jobs in the job market before furthering their studies.

“For example, in Sabah, the government is actively developing tourism-related infrastructure and it is undeniable that the tourism sector is the third sector contributing to the state’s economy due to the presence of foreign tourists – around five million a year from around the world.

“This shows that the tourism sector offers excellent job, business and entrepreneurship opportunities. There are 27 areas in tourism that open up job opportunities in the job market as a result of the rapid growth of tourism in Sabah,” he said, adding that knowledge and skills in the tourism world were a key factor in competing for the opportunities available.

Ewon said the opportunity for students to visit while studying abroad would also mean they can be cultural ambassadors to market the country’s culture.

Therefore, he called on the higher education institution students to become tourism ambassadors to further stimulate the tourism growth in Sabah.

“The students of the tertiary institution play an important role as tourism ambassadors to help promote the tourism sector digitally,” he said.
