Bright future for Sabah hockey

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah hockey is set to have a bright future, according to Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) President Dato’ Seri Subahan Kamal.
He said with Dato’ Sri Anil Jeet Singh elected as the new Sabah Hockey Association (SHA) president, he believed the 33-year-old businessman would bring about positive changes to the sport in the State.

“I’m very happy with the new committee… they love the game and I think there is a lot of future for Sabah hockey, and they could be one of the powerhouses in the country in the near future.
“But to be fair, before this, despite facing many difficulties such as financial and infrastructure, Sabah also managed to win the Sukma title.
“Looking at the present young and dynamic leadership, I’m quite confident that Sabah hockey is going to create a lot of excitement for MHC in the future,” he said.
Subahan said they are paying their attention in Sabah and Sarawak because there are plenty of talents out there that need to be groomed and roped into the national team.

“I’m not speaking rhetoric or just for the sake of making them feel good but there have been indications for instance more and more players from Sabah are making it into the national teams.
“I believe there are more talents out there and I hope we can work together to unearth them.”

He also said he had held a meeting with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Abdal recently.
“I met with the Chief Minister a few months back and during the meeting, I brought up several issues and also informed him that we need to sort out SHA’s internal issue.

“We (MHC) together with SHA have asked for extra benefits such as annual grants as well as a proper hockey turf.”
He was here together with his deputy Prof. Dato’ Dr Shamala Subramaniam and the governing body’s Legal Committee chairman Jadadish Chandra as guests at SHA’s Annual General Meeting cum election for new office bearers here on Sunday.
