UMS completes building composter for SMK Tebobon
KOTA KINABALU: The Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) completed a programme on Initiative to Zero Waste – Building a Composter for SMK Tebobon on 15 October 2019.

The programme which is part of Project for Happiness is a programme for all undergraduates in Malaysia to design grassroots projects to promote happiness and address the root cause of poverty and poor education as well as to contribute to society. 

Project for Happiness has been organised by Khind Starfish Foundation since 2014.

Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation) of Faculty of Engineering, Associate Prof. Dr Abu Zahrim Yaser stated that it is one of the faculty’s initiatives in transferring knowledge from the university to the community and strengthen the students’ soft-skills.

Zahrim, who was also the supervisor of the project conducted a demonstration on procedures to operate the newly-built composter for the students, teachers as well as Parent teacher Association (PIBG) members. 

“On June 24 2019, three final year students from Chemical Engineering Programme UMS, Patricia Bennedette, Mohammad Fahim and Mohd Al Mussa received a fund of RM3,200 from Khind Starfish Foundation to build a composter designed at Faculty of Engineering. 

“A sum of RM450 was also contributed by the local community. Besides me, this project was under the supervision of Dr Mariani Rajin, Dr Sariah Saalah and Nur Aqeela Syuhadah Aji,” he said in a statement.

The composter was built by a total of 18 students in their final year of chemical engineering from UMS and 16 representatives from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tebobon which consisted of students, teachers and PIBG.

Meanwhile, the principal of SMK Tebobon, Ajmal Jumah expressed his utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Faculty of Engineering UMS for organising this project and believes that the project will also enhance students’ motivation towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) subjects.
