UMS don wins China honour
Dr. Siew receiving the Honouorable Commendation at the Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation 2019 held in Jinan, Shandong, China.
Kota Kinabalu: A lecturer of the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), University of Malaysia, Sabah (UMS), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siew Nyet Moi @ Sopiah Abdullah made the UMS proud when she won Honourable Commendation at the Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation 2019 held in Jinan, Shandong, China, recently.

Dr. Siew’s project, entitled “Mentor-Mentee Outreach Programme: Encouraging University and School Partnerships in Strengthening Stem Education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Rural Secondary Schools,” won the jury’s attention.

According to Dr. Siew, the project is aimed at bridging the gap between Stem Education achievement in rural and urban schools in Sabah and Malaysia in general. “This project has helped to improve knowledge and skills in Stem and enhancing the teachers’ ability in teaching and evaluating Stem activities.

“This is in line with the theme of this year’s award, which is to encourage partnerships between universities and schools in developing the 2030 Education Agenda,” she said.

A total of 30 entries from 18 Asia-Pacific countries were nominated for the Honourable Commendation nomination at the Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation 2019, with Fabo Founder, College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, China, Ding Junfeng also being selected as one of two individuals to receive the recognition.

The Wenhui Award was established by the Unesco Asia-Pacific Innovation Education Programme for Development (Apeid) and the People’s Republic of China’s National Commission for Unesco since 2010, taking into account the educational capacity and human innovative spirit of addressing educational issues.

Among the objectives of the award were to evaluate and encourage school-university partnerships to improve the quality of education and lifelong learning, recognise the collective contribution of individuals or institutions in developing universities to enhance the quality of education and lifelong learning as well as encouraging local wisdom between schools and universities to improve the quality of education and lifelong learning.
