Reminder on road safety during CNY
KOTA KINABALU: All road users in Sabah are urged to practise road safety culture by paying heed to traffic regulations to minimise accidents during the Chinese New Year.

Youths and Sport Minister Phoong Jin Zhe said they must exercise greater caution while driving so as to prevent accidents during festive season.

At the same time, he said motorists need to be considerate to motorcyclists and pedestrians who are mostly the victims of accidents.

“Most accidents in Sabah involve pillion riders especially among youths that recorded highest fatalities in the country.

“Due to increase in number of vehicles on the road, motorists need to plan their journey in advance particularly during rainy season that pose more hazards including lower visibility and poor road conditions,” he said.

Phoong said this in his speech at the launching of the road safety awareness campaign, at the State Federal Government Administrative complex here on Tuesday.

Youths and Sport Assistant Minister Arunarnsin Taib delivered Phoong’s speech in the event.

He said motorists also need to be alert on risk factors that can cause accidents such as fatigue and drinking under the influence of alcohol.

In addition, Phoong said they must wear seatbelts, driving their vehicles under speed limit and keeping safe distance from other vehicles could reduce the risk of road crashes.

In the event, motorists were issued with bags filled with road safety brochures, courtesy from the State Road Safety Department ( JKJR) and the Council of Road Safety in the a hope that the campaign for this year will reach out to all road users to ensure safer roads for everyone.
