Association to sponsor Papar trilingual contest

PAPAR: The United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) president Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen pledged to sponsor the Papar-level Chinese, Malay and English Speech, Writing and Poetry Recital Competition for three years from 2020 to 2022.Susan, who is also the developer of Benoni Commercial Centre (BCC) and Parkland City here, will be sponsoring a total of RM 30,000, or RM 10,000 each year. The district-level trilingual speech, writing and poetry recital competition is jointly organised by Papar Chinese Primary School Headmasters Council, The Association of Division Papar National Type School Management Committees and Sabah Chinese School Teachers Association (Jiao Zong). The sponsorship was made possible with facilitation by State Assistant Director of Education (Chinese Schools), Tham Yun Fook. Tham witnessed the signing ceremony for the sponsorship between Susan, The Association of Sabah National Type Chinese School Management Committee (Donglian Sabah) deputy chairman Datuk Lo Kim Thong, The Association of Division Papar National Type School Management Committees chairman Chee Kui Fook and Papar Chinese Primary School Headmasters Council chairperson Mok Lee Yen. Also present were Papar Middle School Board of Governors chairman Vincent Chee Man Foh, SJK(C) Kin Kiau Kinarut Board of Governors chairperson Fung Mui Wing. Susan said her company, the WSG Group, believe in giving back to the society. “I truly believe that each and every Chinese entrepreneurs are obliged to support Chinese education and school activities. “So when Tham Yun Fook broached the subject of sponsoring the Papar-level Chinese, Malay and English Speech, Writing and Poetry Recital Competition for three years, I agreed to ensure the headmasters and teachers make the event a success without having any financial concerns,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tham said Chinese schools should seek to work with local businesses and entrepreneurs in their events. For instance, he said Susan’s support has made organising the trilingual speech, writing and poetry recital competition much easier. He said businesses would also benefit from supporting Chinese schools’ activities as they could promote their products and services to teachers and parents. According to news reports, Tham said Papar was poised to be developed as an education hub. In the future, he said the district would be home to higher learning institutions and the new Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). “Papar is an ideal place for property and home investments due to its tremendous development potential.”

Meanwhile, Mok thanked Susan for her continuous support to the activities held by Chinese primary schools in the district. As stipulated in the agreement, she said WSG Group is allowed to carry out promotional activities at the venue of every activity organised by the Papar Chinese Primary School Headmasters Council to ensure a win-win outcome for both parties. Mok hoped that such arrangement would entice more businesses to support the events organised by Chinese schools in Papar. On behalf of USCCAKK, Susan also presented Papar Middle School and nine Chinese primary schools in the district with copies of Chinese version of the book entitled “One Crowded Moment of Glory: The Kinabalu Guerrillas and The 1943 Jesselton Uprising” authored by renowned historian Datuk Professor Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken and “Feng Xia” written by The Confederation of Chinese Associations of Sabah and Labuan. Representing the schools in receiving the books were SJK(C) Anglo Chinese Papar headmistress Chu Vun San, SJK(C) Cheng Ming headmistress Woo Soo Chin, SJK(C) Cheng Hwa Papar headmaster Wong Chee Fatt, SJK(C) Sen Ming headmaster Low Chee Meng, SJK(C) Bong Hwa headmistress Wong Ling Ching, SJK(C) St Joseph Papar headmistress Chen Kim Ling, SJK(C) Kin Kiau Kinarut headmistress Mok Lee Yen, SJK(C) Hwa Yin Rampazan headmistress Ng Pau Kin and SJK(C) Tung Shan headmistress Chu Kim Phing.
