SANDAKAN: In today’s digital age, cyber attacks and identity thefts have become commonplace especially among social media users and it can happen to anyone when one least expects it.A Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) member, Chang Shak Hung, found himself a victim of identity theft.

Chang found an unknown individual had set up a Facebook account which bore a different name, “Eddy Lee”, but used Chang’s picture as the account’s primary profile picture. He said the incident was discovered when his wife’s uncle informed him at 3.30pm on Wednesday that the uncle had received a friend request from the fake account. Following the incident, Chang made an announcement on his original Facebook profile regarding the cyber attack and denied claims that he is behind the fake account, as he does not know who “Eddy Lee” is. Chang lodged a police and a MCMC report. According to Chang, such reports need to be made in order to discourage other irresponsible individuals from committing racial slander, spreading fake news, mocking the constitution and other issues that could jeopardise harmony.

He extended his gratitude to the police and MCMC for their continuous efforts in eradicating cyber crime.

Additionally, Chang hoped more would come forward and lodge reports to the police and MCMC if they encounter any form of cyber attack on their social media profiles. He said making a police report regarding such issues is believed to be cumbersome by many people. “However, as a responsible user, they need to do so in order to prevent widespread cyber theft and scams which is an inconvenience to many stakeholders.

“Just as I have made a report to the police and MCMC myself, it only took half an hour to lodge the reports respectively and it doesn’t involve too many bureaucracies.

“We should maintain national harmony and peace together by reporting these cyber crimes to the authorities that are required to take action,” he said.
