Kota Kinabalu: A 66-year-old man claims he became the victim of a daring daylight theft at the Shell station in Batu 5, Jalan Tuaran, where he lost RM200,000 and important documents, Tuesday.
The incident at 11.12am was captured on the dashcam of a car that happened to be filling petrol at one of the pumps nearby.
The footage, which went viral on social media, showed a man casually approaching the car, opening the driver’s car door, before closing it.
He then opened the rear door to take out a bag.
He fled on a waiting motorcycle nearby.
The elderly victim was supposedly unaware of the theft until he noticed his car door ajar.
He has since lodged a police report.
Hisham, a kiosk attendant, said the elderly man parked his Range Rover by the petrol station but used a portable inflator to pump air into his tyres.
“The man’s children arrived shortly after the incident to assist him,” he said.
“The man told me he withdrew money from a bank to pay for a contract and was advised to pay in cash rather than via online transfer.
“He said he stopped at the petrol station to check on his tyre, believing it was punctured. He told me he found an iron lodged in the left rear tyre, causing it to puncture.
“After the incident, he proceeded to fill his car with petrol after changing the tyre with the help of his children,” he said.
Several robbery and theft cases have been reported in the city earlier this year, raising concerns about safety.
In response to these incidents, both the police and City Hall have intensified security measures to safeguard residents and visitors.
