Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old man was freed from a charge of trying to smuggle out pangolin scales valued at more than RM100 million.

Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus discharged and acquitted Chai Kok Hiong after the defence concluded their submission on Monday.

The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt against Chai.

Chai was accused of attempting to export the protected species in two containers each containing 227 sacks of pangolin scales weighing 8,058.50kg, all valued at RM100,570,080.
