PAPAR: The locals, especially avid movie goers, are looking forward to an upcoming new cinema here, specifically at Parklane City here, which will be operational in March next year.

A new company, 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd will establish its seventh cinema in the State that will be equipped with high quality equipment to screen various movies.

Its Chief Executive Officer Onn Norshal bin Hamzah said it would spend about RM5 million to build the cinema at an identified site in the Parklane City.

He said the cinema will have six halls comprising four halls with 70 seats each and two halls with 120 seats each.

“I will assure the locals here would be satisfied with the upcoming cinema in Benoni that will be installed with a high-end laser projector from Belgium and the latest sound system from India. Even the pop-corn seedlings are imported from the United States of America.

“Of the six, one is allocated for watching movies in 3D and another hall is to showcase locally produced movies in Sabah so as to give opportunity for local film makers to display their productions.

“We also plan to provide a space for buskers to perform so as to provide them the opportunity to show their talent and passion while earning some income,” he said.

Onn Norshal said this to reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tenancy agreement of the cinema company with the Parklane City developer, WSG Properties Sdn Bhd Managing Director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen and witnessed by project manager Vanessa Wong, at Benoni Show Gallery here, recently.

The company will rent the Parklane City land for a period of 15 years.

He commended Susan for her quick response on the deal which further facilitated the construction of the cinema that will start early June.

“We have dealt with many developers in the past about constructing cinemas but this WSG Properties Sdn Bhd including Datuk Susan Wong is the efficient developer that does its work in a fast manner and executes business transactions smoothly,” said Onn Norshal.

On why the company chose Parklane as its location to set up the cinema, he said a feasibility study on the site by the company found the location to be very attractive because people nowadays are going into new townships like Benoni.

On another question, he said the cinema would be built on the ground floor with eight units with 18-feet high ceilings and those units occupying the six halls, office, kitchen and a small store selling soft drinks and the pop-corn.

In expanding its cinema chain in Sabah, he said it plans to build more new cinemas in Tawau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu, Semporna and Papar, this year.

Next year, Onn Norshal who hails from Tawau, said the company is also looking into the potentials in Keningau, Beaufort, Putatan, Kundasang, Raau, Kinarut and Lahad Datu, because it aims to have about 18 cinemas by end of next year.

Meanwhile, Susan told reporters that she was pleased that the cinema company had chosen Parklane City as the location to establish the cinema to be the first in Papar which is also her hometown.
