Why no extra carriages?
Passengers forced to stand during the train journey.
BEAUFORT: The State Railway Department came under fire from commuters for being indifferent to the inconvenience they are forced to put up with.

They said because of the packed carriages, many passengers including students, are forced to stand all the way.

“Students, civil servants and traders will often scramble for seats to prevent having to stand all the way,” said Kg Halogilat resident, Edwin Louis.

“This is unpleasant especially for school children, pregnant mothers and senior citizens.

“Often one can hear complaints as to why the department is unaware that more carriages are needed to accommodate the increasing number of passengers,” he said

“The train arrives at Halogilat at 5.30am and leaves for Beaufort after that. It returns at 1.30pm because there is no other alternative except to take the train,” said Edwin.

Another passenger, John Gumpong of Kg Montenior, said the Department should be sensitive to this matter because sometimes passengers have to sit on the edge of the train stairs.

“There was an incident when a passenger fell out while the train was moving. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

“If the train stops suddenly, some almost fall over because there is nothing to hold on to” he said.

Another commuter urged the railways management to leave their air-conditioned office and take the train ride to know what the commuters go through.
