Kota Kinabalu: A&W signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the developer of Parklane City, WSG Group managing director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen here on Thursday to establish a drive-thru restaurant at the new commercial hub, Parklane City.

It would be A&W’s flagship store in Sabah to provide the best dining experience and service to customers.

“The Parklane City outlet will be a unique A&W flagship store in Sabah, which also serves as a training centre for our employees,” said A&W (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd director cum chief operating officer Sophia Ch’ng Kuan Beng when representing her chief executive officer George Ang in the signing ceremony with the WSG Group here.

Located at Lot 160 of Parklane City, Susan said the A&W drive-thru is situated at one of the prime locations in the commercial area, given its proximity to 10Star Cinemas, which is set to commence operation by January 22 next year, and Domaio and other electrical stores.

Piling works is expected to commence in December. Construction of the building is slated to be completed by August 31 next year, followed by three months of renovation works in order make it in time to open its doors to the public by Christmas 2024.

“We are grateful for the trust A&W have on our company. We will be working closely to implement the construction so that A&W can commence operation on schedule or even earlier.

“A&W will be another great dining option for residents and consumers in Benoni and Parklane City.”

Benoni Commercial Centre and Parklane City has drawn various international brands and fast-food chains. After a year of preparation and planning, A&W officially announced its new drive-thru at Parklane City.

Ch’ng praised Susan for pioneering Malaysia’s one-of-a-kind “shopping mall” concept on Benoni Commercial Centre and Parklane City.

She said Benoni Commercial Centre and Parklane City are completely different from other commercial hubs or housing projects because the development has the whole package – housing estates, shoplots, hypermarkets, supermarkets, cinema, banks and hotels – which can attract motorists and consumers along the Pan Borneo Highway.

“The Parklane City project developed by Susan is very successful. This new ‘shopping mall’ concept cannot be found anywhere else in the country, not even West Malaysia.

“We believe this concept will become a new trend and benchmark of the property industry in Malaysia, and this gives us the confidence to set up a drive-thru restaurant here.”

Ch’ng said A&W set its eyes on Parklane City a year ago.

“It is also likely that the A&W here may be the first 24-hour outlet in Sabah.”

A&W currently has 102 outlets nationwide and employs around 1,000 staff. By the end of 2024, A&W is expected to increase its number of outlets up to 125.

The fast-food chain is actively expanding the Sabah market and currently has four outlets in the state, which are located in 1Borneo Hypermall, Inanam, Bundusan and Papar Square.

We are stringent in selecting our locations, and have conducted market and consumer survey as well as employees’ training before we open a new outlet.”

The new A&W drive-thru restaurant encompasses a land area of 26,000 square feet (sq ft), with a built up area of 4,275 sq ft. It is expected to create between 40 to 50 job.

“We are more than happy to hire and train locals. Providing opportunities for locals to be trained under an international brand is part of our efforts to give back to the community.”

Also present at the signing ceremony were WSG Group directors Vanessa Wong and Melissa Wong, and A&W operations manager Alvin Leow.

Susan said Parklane City will soon see more well-known brands that will help stimulate the local economic activities, including the much-anticipated 10Star Cinemas that is expected to open on January 22, 2024 after its equipment arrives.

She said the four 19-storey condominium towers in Parklane City totalling 656 units are expected to be launched next year.
