BEAUFORT: Residents want the telecommunication substations in Kg Bangakalalak and Kg Mentulud to be operational as soon as possible.

Abdul Sani Mokjin, a resident, said recently that telecommunications are vital because they allow communities to communicate with one another. “It is very important, especially during emergencies,” he said.

He claims on occasions residents need to call the ambulance, the Fire and Rescue Department, or even the police, but the lack of a telecommunications network made this difficult.

“What if there is fire, of course it would be difficult and the house would be completely destroyed because it would be too late by the time someone finally gets to call the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said.

He claims that many people own handphones, but that just a few locations have a telecommunications network, while the majority do not.

“It’s been a year since the substation at the gateway of Kg Bangkalalak and Kg Mentulud was completed. Everyone is wondering when it will start working,” he said.

The substation is expected to begin operations as early as December this year or as late as January 2024.

“In response to a Facebook posting about the substation in October, I was approached by an MCMC officer stationed in Keningau, as well as telco providers from Celcom DiGi and YES/YTL officers.

“They assured that the substation will start operations by December this year or January next year,” he said, thanking Sipitang Member of Parliament Datuk Matbali Musah for highlighting their plight to the Communications and Digital Minister.
