Nik Nazmi tells PAS to stop misleading public on Federal Court's nullification of Kelantan's shariah criminal laws
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad claimed that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan are ‘deliberately pretending’ not to understand the Kelantan shariah enactment issue.
PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has urged PAS to stop misleading the public over the Federal Court’s striking down of 16 provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019.

Nik Nazmi said he is convinced that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan understand the issue at hand, but are “deliberately pretending not to”, to instill fear among Muslims for their own interests.

“PAS must stop confusing the people by insulting the Federal Constitution, which has been the foundation of Malaysia’s development,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He described as “irresponsible” PAS’s act in using legal technicalities for political gain, especially with regards to religious matters.

“A ‘campaign’ like this will only sow confusion and hatred among the people and will not propel Malaysia forward,” he said.

Yesterday, Hadi claimed that there are certain “unwise” judges who possess a mindset and intellect “influenced” by Malaysia’s former colonisers.

While the Marang MP did not name anyone specifically, he said previous judges like the late former lord president Salleh Abas did not entertain efforts to sideline Islamic law.

The Perikatan Nasional deputy chairman also said Muslims must oppose efforts to mislead them from the “true Islam”.

Takiyuddin said last week the apex court’s decision to annul the 16 provisions of the Kelantan enactment would also threaten shariah laws in other states.

“This is a ‘Black Friday’ for shariah law. When a state’s shariah criminal law is annulled, it puts the law in all other states in a precarious position,” he was quoted as saying after the court delivered its ruling.
