THE proposal for a new arrangement between Sabah and the Federal government has sparked intense debate, but it is not a novel concept.
Discussions surrounding the redefinition of Sabah’s role within the federation have persisted, whether through supplementary agreements, a comprehensive new deal, or aligning with the aspirations outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Scholars and prominent figures have engaged with these ideas and mulled its implications, underpinned by an aim to reshape either the status quo or the current fundamental relationship between Sabah and the federation.
The formation of Malaysia in 1963, through the Malaysia Agreement involving Sabah (then North Borneo), Sarawak, the Federation of Malaya, and Singapore, was ratified by the newly established Federal constitution.
