Rafflesia blooms in Poring

RANAU: Rafflesia, the world’s biggest flower, has bloomed in Poring.
The Rafflesia Keithii, with a size of 76cm (pic), was spotted to have bloomed with six petals on Thursday (March 28) at the Poring Tropical Garden, Poring Hot Springs, Kinabalu Park.

According to the Sabah Parks Facebook page, those who wish to view this rare flower can do so until April 1.
A photo and information of the blooming was recorded by Sabah Parks worker Albosius Jihin.
Rafflesias are also known as dead plants or corpse flowers as they do not give out scents but a fishy smell, as per some.
There are only three species of Rafflesia flowers in Sabah, namely the Rafflesia Keithii, Rafflesia Pricei and Rafflesia Tengku Adlinii.

Keithii is usually found in the lowlands, while Pricei can be found in the highlands such as along the Tambunan-Kota Kinabalu road, Keningau and Tenom districts, while Rafflesia Tengku Adlinii can be found in Maliau Basin and Mount Trusmadi.
Rafflesia is as a fully protected plant under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
