Kota Kinabalu: The State Government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal is committed to improving the well-being of the people and boost homeownership, said Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister, George Hiew Vun Zin. “We hope to see more housing projects to boost homeownership among the people,” he said during a courtesy call by United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) committee led by its president Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen at his office, here, in conjunction with the association’s upcoming annual Chinese New Year Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival cum Chinese Cultural Village Exhibition.

Hiew said the annual festival organised by USCCAKK has become a signature event for Sabah, especially Kota Kinabalu. He said the festival was highly anticipated among the locals and was strongly supported by the Chinese community as well. Wong alongside the committee also paid a courtesy call on Mayor Datuk Nordin Siman to invite the latter to the festival which will be held at the Likas Sports Complex on Jan 11. Nordin said Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) would fully support and facilitate cultural activities organised by all ethnic groups in the city and hoped that the Chinese community would maintain good relationship and close cooperation with the City Hall to promote cultural events as well. Additionally, the USCCAKK delegation also called on prominent players in the automotive industry including Datuk Aloysius Tan and Datuk Anthony Chiu Nyuk Loi, who both rendered their sponsorship for the event. USCCAKK hoped that more entrepreneurs and businessmen would step forward to support its effort to preserve the Chinese cultural activities. Meanwhile, Wong said the Chinese Cultural Village Exhibition would showcase traditional Chinese pastries, delicacies and tea culture. “The exhibition is held in the form of competition. “Besides decorating their booths, the 15 associations under USCCAKK are expected to present their best traditional pastries and tea culture to win the coveted award,” she said. The Chinese Cultural Village Exhibition will be launched by the Consul-General of China in Kota Kinabalu,  Liang Caide, whereas Shafie is expected to officiate the Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival.
