Kota Kinabalu: Cheryl Ellron did not forget her Murut roots when she settled down with a Briton in London in 2020.

She felt proud to don the Murut costume at the 59th Malaysia Day and 89th Armed Forces’ Day celebrations at the High Commission of Malaysia last year.

“I knew that others would wear the usual national costumes such as Baju Kurung or Batik or Kebaya. I wanted something different and thought about my own culture back in Sabah.” True enough, there were endless inquiries when she wore a Murut dress.

More importantly, while in London, she also founded “Makan Bites”, an online platform promoting Malaysian food products.

“It was during the pandemic. My aim was to tell people about Malaysian food and ingredients.

“With more Asians studying or on holiday in Europe, they would be longing for local tastes. Especially those unable to go back home,” she said.

The event was hosted by Dato Zakri Jaafar and spouse Datin Aini Abd Rahman, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. Cheryl had the opportunity to meet up with various Asian delegates, ambassadors and the likes.

Currently residing in Lincolnshire, Cheryl has been promoting Malaysian cuisine ever since via her online platform and actively participating in various roadshows, bazaars and expos in and outside of United Kingdom.

“Take the advantage of this conveniences provided by the internet. It is so much easier as everything is in our finger tips. “Of course, one also need to work hard, work smart and meet as many people as possible to promote our wonderful food and culture and be involved in various events,” said the former Bank Manager from Keningau. Ever since her online platform debuted two years ago, Malaysian products have been vigorously known to many people online.
