Kota Kinabalu: Nine eateries around the Polytechnic Commercial Centre in Sepanggar were ordered to close after health authorities found rats and cockroaches at their premises.

Kota Kinabalu Health Officer Dr Prabakaran Dhanarah said 11 other notices were issued to the owners or representatives of the premises and food operators for various other offences.

He said the closure order was issued under Section 32B of the Food Act 1983 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 for various offences.

“During the operation by the Food Safety and Quality Unit from the Kota Kinabalu Health office, we inspected a total of 15 food premises and ordered nine of them to be closed immediately for various offences related to hygiene,” he said.

“Notices under Section 32B of the Food Act 1983 have also been issued for failure to register food premises with the Health Ministry.

“Food operators were found not to have undergone food handling training, they did not get the anti-typhoid jab and the operators failed to comply with requirements regarding keeping the premises clean and free from garbage and pests such as rats and cockroaches,” he added.

The operations also involved personnel from Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the police.

Dr Prabakaran said DBKK as well as Ministry enforcement officers also issued compound notices to some operators for various offences under their respective purview.

He advised owners of premises to be always aware of the cleanliness aspects as stipulated in the provisions of the law.

“We will continue to carry out inspections on food outlets throughout the city to protect the public from health hazards and fraud in the preparation, sale and consumption of food and related matters,” he said.
