PAPAR: Malaysia is not a country that belongs to one race and its language, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said having such a perception could divide the people and create disharmony.

“Don't think this country is only for one race and one language…this can lead to the division of our country and the people.

“The Federal Constitution states that we must respect and give rights to all races and those with religious beliefs in the country.

“Most importantly, there is no fight and we accept the differences and the diversity in various ethnic backgrounds for harmony living,” he said in his speech at the Papar parliamentary “Semarak Perpaduan Rakyat” with the Prime Minister programme at Palm Square in Kinarut, here, Wednesday.

Anwar also visited the Kinarut Palm Condo Show Room Gallery and signed a big poster together with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Tasks) Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali and Kawang Assemblyman Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar.

Also present was WSG Group Managing Director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen.

“That is why I ask my friends in Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula to remember our responsibility as human beings.

“It is not wrong to defend own races or ethnic group but must remember not to insult and mistreat other people,” Anwar said.

On the Pan Borneo Highway, he said he had discussed with Hajiji and Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadhillah Yusof to speed up its completion.

As for Papar, Anwar said the Federal Government has approved a new road project - Pengalat bypass road - at a cost of RM538 million and an road upgrading road project from the Sabindo roundabout in Lok kawi to Sungai Kinarut that has been delayed but now continued under the Unity Government.

He also disclosed a new application from Armizan, who is Papar MP, through Local Government and Housing Ministry that has been approved to upgrade drainage system in Pekan Kinarut and upgrading the road to Taman Limauan and Kg Anak Somboi, Kinarut.

At the same event, Anwar also handed out the pension card of Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) director, the late Lt. Col Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub, who died during the Malaysian Everest 2023 (ME2023) climbing mission recently, to his family.
