TAMPARULI: The community is called upon to preserve and defend the traditions and culture of the heritage inherited from generation to generation.

State Rural Development Minister, Datuk Jahid Jahim, said the sustainability of Kadazan Dusun customs and culture must be protected and maintained because it is this heritage that reflects the race.

“The Kaamatan Festival is the best platform for our community to highlight the richness of the art and culture of the Kadazan Dusun community because that is a very valuable asset and there will be no replacement later,” he said, when officiating the Kaamatan Festival of Kampung Tenghilan on Saturday.

Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary III of the State Ministry of Rural Development, Peter Jonu; Tamparuli Community Development Leader (PPM), Madin Anak; and Sabah Mitatabang Community President, Dr Bonaventure Boniface.

He said, in addition to being a place to unite the population, the Kaamatan Festival can also preserve the culture of the nation’s heritage which is increasingly being eroded by the effects of today’s digital revolution.

Jahid, who is also the Tamparuli Assemblyman, said  the spirit of belonging that is fostered not only every time a festival is held but if practised every time would strengthen the heart and unite regardless of race and religion.

“Culture needs to be maintained for the sake of the continuity of our civilisation, and through traditional culture like this we know our origins,” he added.

Meanwhile, at the same ceremony, Jahid also approved the Tenghilan Book Research Project Working Paper: History and Transformation, which will start in August 2023, and is expected to be completed in May 2024.

The project was led by Dr Bonaventure.

Earlier, Organising Chairman, Percy Johnny appreciated the contribution of Jahid, community leaders, villagers and individuals who donated gifts to make the event a success.

Among the activities carried out were a lucky draw, stage events, traditional cuisine and drinks and much more.
