Kota Kinabalu: Invest Sabah Berhad sees the Qingtian region in China as offering great potential for Sabah’s products, especially coffee and chocolate.

Invest Sabah Berhad Deputy Chairman George Wong Hsueh Cheng said wine, coffee and chocolate are being imported heavily into the Qingtian region from foreign countries, adding it is no wonder that its town nicknamed “华侨之乡” (home of overseas Chinese), or also “小欧洲” (little Europe).

He said Qingtian (also known as Tsingtien) is a “very special city” because its residents are mostly overseas Chinese who are doing business in the city and most of the products sold there are goods imported from outside the country.

“There is so much market potential in Qingtian, especially in the import and export sector. I believe that there is a lot of room for Sabah to tap into the market there,” said Wong, who represented Invest Sabah Berhad at the 12th World Chinese Economy Forum in China held in Qingtian, Zhejiang Province, China, from Nov 10-13.

Wong said during the event, he had a bilateral meeting with the Vice Chairman of the Qingtian County Committee (China Committee for the Promotion of International Trade) Yu Jiang.

During the meeting, he said Invest Sabah had introduced the potential of Sabah with its counterpart BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) as a strategic location with a population of about 80 million.

Apart from that, Invest Sabah also introduced Sabah’s local products such as Sabah Tea and Tenom Coffee which are very famous internationally to Yu. He informed Yu that Sabah hopes to be able to export these products to Qingtian.

“There will be more good news coming as with ties between Sabah and Qingtian County being improved. I am very much looking forward towards the exporting of Sabah’s products to Qingtian and the rest of China,” said Wong.
