Setting car on fire: Farmer, 34, is charged

Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old farmer was charged in the Sessions Court here with setting fire on a car in Kota Belud.
Mohd Azrul Sapilin pleaded not guilty before Judge Elsie Primus to committing mischief by burning a Perodua Bezza belonging to Kassim Wahman at 6.30pm on Aug 26 in Kg Linau.

The charge stated that Azrul’s alleged act caused the vehicle owner to lose more than RM50.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Tham Pou Jin in applying for pre-trial case management (PTCM), proposed bail at RM10,000.
Counsel Julhamri Jumhani, representing Azrul, requested for a lower bail amount as he was low flight risk.

Elsie fixed Jan 29 for PTCM and released the accused on a bail of RM8,000 with RM5,000 deposited in two sureties.
In another case, the case of an unemployed man, who was charged with committing sexual assault against his teenage distant cousin, will be rementioned on Jan 9.

Elsie set the date for the 23-year-old man following an application by the prosecution after informing the court that they received an instruction to proceed with trial.
DPP Tham said the prosecution has five witnesses.
The accused allegedly caressed the breasts of the 13-year-old girl (now 17) at 9.30pm on June 6, 2019 in a village house, Kota Belud.
The charge under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.
The accused, who could not furnish the bail offered by the court previously, was ordered to the further remanded.
