Kota Kinabalu: The awareness and compliance among the motoring public, particularly motorcyclists, to traffic rules and regulations is still low, said Road Transport Department (JPJ) Senior Enforcement Director Datuk Lokman Jamaan.

He said the department viewed the matter seriously and would not compromise with companies, owners and drivers of commercial vehicles, as well as other road users, who continued to disregard traffic rules and regulations.

“Therefore, JPJ advises all road users to always comply with the stipulated traffic rules, as well as increase the safety level of their vehicles to ensure the road ecosystem is always safe for other road users,” he said.

He said this to reporters at a 2024 Chinese New Year Special Operation at Tuaran Bypass, which also involved the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other enforcement agencies such as the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

Also present was Sabah JPJ Director Mohd Harris Ali.

Lokman said the department inspected a total of 18,669 vehicles in Sabah from February 1 to 15, during which 5,915 notices were issued for various offences, with 32 per cent of the offences involving failure to comply with road safety rules.

“Based on preliminary analysis of the 15-day operation, the road safety compliance is low.

“Many of the cases involved motorcyclists, which led to the confiscation of some 110 motorcycles,” he said.

Lokman said the summonses were issued for various offences such as driving without competence driving licence (CDL), expired road tax and smaller offences such as jumping queue.

“There were a total of 1,921 summonses (32.4pc of the total summonses) issued for not having CDL, 1,323 (22.3pc) for expired road tax, 924 for driving without road tax or insurance (15.6pc), 825 for other offences (13.9pc), 499 (8.4pc) for technical offences and 245 (4.1pc) for without technical licence,” he added.

Lokman said it is vital for motorists to play their roles and be vigilant of their responsibilities on the road to prevent any necessary action.

He said the department has implemented and enforced necessary programmes and campaigns to educate as well as remind road users of their responsibilities towards road safety which should be emphasised not just by JPJ but especially by the motorists themselves.

“Various operations such as Ops Khas Kenderaan Perkhidmatan Awam (KPA), Ops Khas Kenderaan Barangan (KPB), Ops Khas Motosikal, Ops Khas Sembilan (9) Kesalahan Utama and Ops Khas Teknikal are carried out across the country, including Sabah,” he added.
