Illegal sand dredging: Department seizes machinery
Some of the machinery seized by the enforcement team
KUALA PENYU: The Land and Survey Department took action against illegal sand dredging and collection activities in Jalan Bandau, here, on March 25.

Its Director Datuk Bernard Liew said two enforcement teams were dispatched to the site following a public complaint.

He said investigations revealed the operators conducted their illegal activity at night.

“Our team started monitoring the site at 5pm before swooping in at 8.10pm to confiscate the equipment used for the activity,” he said in a statement, Tuesday.

Three Hitachi ZAX-100 excavators, a Hitachi EX200, a Hyundai 140LCM-7 and two 10-tonne lorries laden with sand were among the machinery seized. However, no arrests were made as the workers escaped.

“We filed a police report on the raid and seizure. Once all of the necessary information has been collected, an investigation paper will be initiated,” he said.

He said appropriate actions would be taken in accordance with the terms of the Sabah Land Ordinance Chapter 68.

He also said their enforcement team will continue to monitor such illegal activities around the State.

“We will monitor not just during the week but also on weekends and public holidays, and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who violates the law.”
