Emulate Federal’s STR, urges Nabawan rep

Kota Kinabalu: Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohd Yassin suggested that the State Government emulate the implementation of the Federal Government’s Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) by giving at least one-off cash assistance to the people in need, especially those in the poor and hardcore poor categories in Sabah.
He said this is in addition to continuing and increasing the food basket assistance and housing ownership assistance such as Rumah Mesra SMJ and these must reach those who truly need it.

“Government agencies must also play an important role as the movers and implementers of government policies, especially to help the people to progress in terms of social and economic development, where we must prioritise local people with B40 status to be recruited as a workforce or trained to master at least basic skills in the field of interest that they want to venture into.
“This will contribute to the eradication of poverty and reduce the percentage of unemployment in the State,” he said when debating the government’s policy speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session here.
Abdul Ghani also appreciated the Government’s efforts to develop Pagalungan New Township in the Pagalungan sub-district.
“The question is, when will the work begin for the development of this Pagalungan New Township? How long will it take for the development to be completed?

“As a representative of the people in Nabawan, it seems to me that the priority for the development of a new township in the Pagalungan sub-district is very accurate because this area is very close to the neighbouring Indonesia which has built a border post complex next to Kg. Bantul, Pensiangan which is in the Pagalungan sub-district.
“If we look at this scenario carefully, it gives a clear preliminary picture of which the Pagalungan sub-district is among the important areas to be developed at this point, especially in efforts to strengthen the security and socioeconomic system, including the internet network coverage that needs to be developed in this area in preparation for the overflow of economic activities as well as social impact and benefits for the State and the country in general.”

Abdul Ghani also asked about the status or progress regarding the upgrading of some basic infrastructure in Nabawan, including the two iron bridges which are the main routes into Nabawan Town that have not yet been upgraded to concrete bridges.
“What are the latest developments on this matter? Secondly, about former logging roads in Nabawan such as Jalan Kg Mesopoh to Kg Katalirus, Kg Audience to Kg Layon, Kg Pentonomon to Kg Katalirus, Kg Pentomon to Kg Nangkawangan, Kg Binanun to Kg Paragana, Pensiagan to Kg Salinatan, Pagalung to Kg Saliku, Kg Kataliru to Kg Susuon, and Kg Layon to Kg Nangkawangan.
“What is the actual status of the State Government’s latest action to upgrade these former logging roads to become main roads in Nabawan? I hope that this matter is taken into account and appropriate follow-up action is taken for the wellbeing of the people.”
