Kota Kinabalu: The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system at the Likas Stadium will only be implemented in the Malaysian Football League (MFL) matches later in the season.

MFL chief executive officer Datuk Stuart Ramalingam said the reason for the delay is because the equipment installed here was a different system than the one currently operated by MFL.

He was speaking to the press after a meeting with the Sabah Sports Board chaired by the Youth and Sports Ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Mansur Asun at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex on Sunday.

He said the operators will need time to learn the new system in Likas Stadium before it can be successfully used in the MFL matches.

“System operators are referees and they need an adaptation period to ensure that they are comfortable with the utilisation of VAR.

“A discussion was held earlier to have a familiarisation session on the ‘Goal’ system operated in Likas but this will take time.

“However, we will have several opportunities to hold it in June, September and October during the Fifa window.

“The training may be held here or in Kuala Lumpur, and I am certain that the system will be implemented,” he said.

Meanwhile, also present at the meeting were MFL board member Joehari Ayub, who is also the status committee chairman, Sabah Sports Board general manager Terrance Pudin and other top officials from the board and Sabah Football Association.
