SIPITANG: Many residents were affected by the flash flood as a result of heavy rains in Kampung Menengah, here, Friday.
A resident, Daud, said flood waters began pouring into his home at 5am.

The low lying position of the village and the lack of proper drainage system means excess water cannot be diverted to the nearby river.
“Although we have just cleaned the ditch, the water was not flowing out properly. Cleaning of the river should be carried out,” he said.
“We tried to save our properties, especially electronics and my children’s books and beds, to a higher place,” he said.
He urged the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to immediately clean and deepen nearby rivers to prevent further flooding.

“The Village Community Development Authority (JKKK) also needs to pressure the government into solving this problem to prevent bigger disasters,” he added.
Meanwhile, a member of the Haji Hashim Mosque, said the heavy rain had caused flood water to enter the ablution hall.

“All areas were flooded from the ablution room down to the parking lots.
“The drains were not able to accommodate the water flow out to the sea even though the mosque is just nearby the sea,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sani Maisin said during incident, an electric pole that had just been planted by the contractor had fallen onto the road in Kg Seri Menanti.
“It is possible that the strong winds coupled with soft soil from rainwater caused the newly planted pole to collapse,” he said.
